When dealing with loss of possessions or property, it is wise to get in contact with your insurance company as quickly as possible.
If you do not have insurance and are planning to get one in case of an earthquake, be sure to specify that you want the earthquake protection also. Many companies exclude natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and of course, earthquakes from their list of causes of damage which they cover. Special earthquake coverage can usually be bought, however if not specified, it usually will not be included in the insurance contract.
