Have an Earthquake Kit

A good earthquake kit includes:

  • Flashlight (wind-up is best, but battery powered one is better than none)
  • Extra batteries for flashlight and any other battery powered items
  • Radio (wind-up is preferred, but again, battery powered one is better than none at all)
  • First aid kit which should include:
    • Bandages
    • Antiseptic towelettes
    • First aid manual
    • EPI-PENs
    • Antihistamine pills
    • Gauze pads
    • Tweezers
    • Scissors
    • Butterfly closures
    • Pain releavers such as Tylenol
    • Cotton balls
    • Laytex gloves
    • Hydrogen Peroxide
    • Cold packs (ones which simply need to be snapped to become cold)
    • Sewing needle
    • Eye wash solution
    • Plastic Bags
    • Extra medicine for those who require it

In addition to these items, fresh water and non-perishable food items should be stored in a secure place. With this, have a non-electric can opener to be able to open the food easily. Make sure to have enough food and water to last 3-5 days, as this is the estimated maximum wait time by both Canadian and U.S. emergency crews.

Have sturdy walking shoes and an extra coat or jacket to keep warm as well as extra cash and credit cards in the case that banks were unavailable.
